Increased efficiency and streamlined processes through a sustainable IT strategy: With the support of TIMETOACT GROUP, Turck Holding GmbH has restructed its IT organization to ensure it is future-ready.
Challenge: Crafting a Modern IT Strategy for a Legacy Company
Should the internal IT department continue to grow, or would it be more effective to outsource specific tasks to external partners and streamline internal processes? These and other questions were posed by Michael Hinz at the end of 2023. His mission as the newly appointed Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Turck Holding GmbH: to redefine the IT strategy for this long-established company.
Turck employs around 5,000 people worldwide in the development and production of components for factory, process, and logistics automation. In Germany alone, more than 2,500 employees work at locations in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Halver, Beierfeld, and Detmold to create digitally connected solutions for efficient automation systems. Information technology plays a pivotal role in this company, which was founded in 1965.
Strategic Partnership with TIMETOACT GROUP
Developing a future-proof IT strategy is a demanding process. It requires not only a comprehensive understanding of internal structures, market competition, and long-term business goals but also the ability to integrate diverse perspectives. Alongside management, input from IT team members is also essential.
While the CIO is responsible for the IT strategy, external expertise can accelerate and enrich the process. TIMETOACT GROUP, for example, provides access to best practices from other organizations and accelerates the problem-solving process. Additionally, it brings in diverse viewpoints and enhances the efficiency of the strategic development process. This is why Michael Hinz chose to collaborate with TIMETOACT GROUP. Dr. Jan Hachenberger, Director of Strategy Consulting, supported Turck’s CIO from the initial concept to the implementation of the new IT strategy.
Through interactive workshops and close collaboration with management and employees, the digital strategy was built around the guiding principle of "Simplicity First."
What should the future IT organization look like?
Which systems are essential?
How must the IT department’s structure evolve?
How can employees be prepared and developed for new challenges?
Operationalizing the Strategy: Lean and Efficient into the Future
One key outcome was the decision to outsource certain IT tasks to external partners, allowing Turck’s internal team to focus on core processes. This lean approach enables a leaner, more efficient organization and accelerates internal processes.
The realignment has already demonstrated tangible results, such as during the SAP contract negotiations, where TIMETOACT GROUP also provided advisory support. The newly negotiated agreement is tailored to Turck’s specific needs and ensures a smooth cloud migration for the company’s SAP landscape.
Consolidation and Standardization: Middleware and IT Support
The "Simplicity First" approach is also reflected in the consolidation of middleware. Previously, Turck used a wide array of middleware solutions. This complex network of interconnected systems resulted in inconsistent data exchange between applications. As part of the new IT strategy, Turck decided to reduce the number of middleware solutions to just two: the SAP Integration Suite and Boomi. This move enables more efficient and flexible system integration.
Additionally, TIMETOACT GROUP supported the assessment and evaluation of IT support requirements. Together, a comprehensive concept was developed that defines the necessary service components and service levels while calculating the associated costs. Based on this concept, external providers will now handle IT support requirements through an Application Management Service, relieving internal resources and boosting efficiency.
Key to Success: Collaboration
With its new IT strategy, Turck has not only laid the groundwork for a more efficient organization but has also successfully implemented tangible projects. From redesigning the SAP contract to consolidating middleware and issuing a tender for a comprehensive IT support system, the collaboration with TIMETOACT GROUP has provided critical momentum for shaping the future direction of Turck’s IT landscape.
"The TIMETOACT GROUP supported us in defining a future-oriented IT strategy and developing a clear target image for our IT organization. This new orientation enables us to structure our IT more efficiently and to align it optimally with future requirements. We thank the TIMETOACT GROUP for their excellent collaboration and look forward to continuing our work together on future projects."
