Stuttgart/Cologne – The internationally established LAPP Group focuses on the internal factor “communication” using IBM Connections and the Web Content Management Extension for IBM Connections (XCC). In their new intranet LAPP Group combines communication and collaboration: Employees from all locations around the world use the new platform for exchanging ideas and knowledge management.

LAPP Group employees are situated around the globe. Their interests and topics vary by location and division. The predominantly static intranet did not meet the employees demand for a dynamic flow of information. It also wasn’t accessible for everyone. Employees didn’t recieve the added value they were searching for. Therefore, the intranet faded into the background more and more.

Informations, communications and interactions on one platform

“An intranet that is not being used, is of no use at all. We therefore asked our employees about their demands and expectations: Communication and interaction clearly lead the wishlist,” Eva Martinez, BHR HR & Organisational Development, explains. As a  result, LAPP decided to introduce a new intranet platform that would increase the whole companies connectiveness intensively. In addition to up-to-date information it should provide opportunities to cross-site knowledge sharing and information management. “We reviewed several different solutions and IBM Connections appealed the most to us. The software is intuitive and already comes with a lot of features by default.” Eva Martinez recalls. With the use of IBM Connections, the intranet should be transformed into an multifunctional tool for employees and international cooperation should be improved.

IBM Connections serves as a central storage for knowledge

Leading discussions in forums, In Foren diskutieren, elaborate information in wikis or blogs, or uploading and managing files – IBM Connections is a powerful platform for internal collaboration. The entire LAPP Group benefits from the joint knowledge management in IBM Connections:

  • Employees can found communities to their respective field of expertise and exchange ideas with their colleagues regardless of their location.
  • Basic data on the employees’ profiles are easily accessible. Additional, LAPP-specified fields adjust the profile content optimally to the requirements of the LAPP Group (schema-extension).
  • If employees search for internal expertise, they will find it in IBM Connections: Which colleague is a specialist in this field of expertise? Are there files regarding a special topic that have already been created for the company? IBM Connections serves as central knowledge repository in which the internal know-how is bundled.

The new social intranet also required a central homepage, showing all relevant company information. “We first heard of the TIMETOACT Web Content Management Extension, short XCC, through IBM,” Martinez says. In addition to the peer-to-peer collaboration of IBM Connections, XCC enables the classic top-down communication. “In my opinion IBM Connections is only complete with XCC,” Eva Martinez ethuses, because IBM Connections and XCC cover the requirements of the global enterprise entirely.

Internal Communications on one collaborations-platform

XCC enhances IBM Connections with a classic homepage for the intranet, using LAPP Group’s corporate design. For this reason, internal communication is given the opportunity to control and tactically spread information even with the new social intranet. All content is created in IBM Connections and then integrated on the homepage using widgets. In addition to the highly flexible widgets for different news categories such as Company, Region or HR, external content completes the homepages rang of information.

“For us, the classic homepage was an extremely important featuer. The new Lappnet has been received very well by our employees. This was certainly due to the fact that the intranet is so intuitive. The homepage with it’s classic intranet feeling has contributed a lot to the acceptance.”

TIMETOACT’s full service for IBM Connections: Professional design, implementation & coaching

TIMETOACT not only took on the Implementation of IBM Connections and XCC, but also provided support for the technical design and employee training. LAPP Group and TIMETOACT worked together to develop a concept for marketing and communication and worked out guidelines for social media. A clear authorization concept resulted from the close cooperation with the employee origanization and the data protection officer.

The administrators and staff of the german LAPP Group locations were trained in-site,while the remaining international locations have beenintroduced to their new internal platform via webinars.
